Africa is covered by rocks from the Precambrian era (600 million to 3.5 billion years ago), which make up 57% of its total landmass. Many rocks near the mantle, including kimberlite rocks containing diamonds, have been extensively extruded, resulting in abundant mineral resources such as gemstones.
