Much of the continent is made up of newer geological layers exposed after glaciers melted following the Ice Age, yielding numerous fossils of popular dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. In contrast, the central part of the continent consists of much older rock formations, with the oldest known rock on Earth—a Precambrian metamorphic rock dating back approximately 4 billion years—discovered in northeastern Canada.
