The South American continent consists of the ancient, stable Brazilian Shield and the relatively younger Andes mountain range. The Andes are geologically active with abundant mineral resources like copper and lithium. There are also extensive deposits of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, where fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric life have been discovered.
